Magic Knight Contest:Fencing Magister (Lv1 Update) by Coffee-Straw-LuZi Magic Knight Contest:Fencing Magister (Lv1 Update) by Coffee-Straw-LuZi
Artwork/Card work for the game Magic Knight, VNG. corp, DeNA Japna, Yahoo!Mobage.

For :iconomocha-san: Magic Knight Contest! [link]

Name : Selene the Fencing Magister
Race : Elf

I've been waiting to draw a blonde-haired elf. XD
For this picture, I experimented with light blue and dark blue that I've never been using before. (I'm better at black, red and gold.)
Looks good to me to a certain level, but still not that good with it.

Ps. I'm not so good to use English If I write something wrong I'm sorry :)

Overall it look very cool. It have a lot of details on armor and design of her transparent sword, it look like a crystal but it look like it very sharp and can use it for kill the enemy xD not like a normal crystal sword that look like a toy lol.

About design and color "blue white and gold" is match with her and it was so perfect

about drawing I have no comment about it :)

but this character is too bright when background was so dark
but conversely it make you focus on character more than normal then...I don't mind that much about it
I love it that all xD

Looking over this, it is hard to find any deeming factors to criticize, but there is something which rings a bell, something that is missing from this piece.

But first I'll talk about other factors, and then move onto that.
So first of all, the anatomy. Very well done, no particular bad points to highlight to be honest, though the characters gesture and posture could be questioned. Assuming it is for a Magic Knight theme, the characters gesture and posture could be too... timid, for a 'knight'.
A more formidable look would suite this scenario well. At the moment, she is taking the innocent, worried and none aggressive look. Though this is merely my taste and opinion, I think a more aggressive stance, and a somewhat, tougher look would have suited this scenario, and character better.

One where her weapon would be un-sheathed and aimed at the viewer, as well as having a more stressed facial expression, one which can be related to a person about to attack, or someone who is in battle, and in a steady stance.
At the moment, her facial expression and gesture is more related to someone trying to help up their friend who just fell over (Plus the hair is also giving this expression, a weaker look)

Yes, the piece looks great, the posture is well drawn and looks brilliant, but it lacks power, it lacks impact. That is what this piece, in my opinion, is lacking.
There is little to no essence of power and magic, and being a Magic Knight theme, these are two essences which should be first on the list of things to present to your viewer.

So first, to correct this issue (of which I personally feel about, sorry If I am being harsh XD), change the posture, gesture and facial expression of the character, as I described somewhat above. This would give the piece the 'power essence' it lacks. The 'umph' and impact it requires.

Secondly, the magic essence. Now not every piece would need a magical essence, but the fact that you have given a character a blue transparent sword, and I am assuming the character is also elven; these are two large factors which can be closely tied in with magic, and most people viewing it would also think along those lines.
For example, if you saw two individual pieces of a Magical Knight piece, with one being human, and one being elf. Both pieces are the same, par from the characters race. Now if both of these pieces presented an element of magic (Such as glowing light from their hands) which one would you think would suite the magical essence best? The elf or the human? I know what I would choose.

Now this bond between the magic and the race + sword, is a perfect factor to utilize in presenting magic, which in turn, will present a more powerful, 'aw inspiring' and beautiful piece (Honestly, it's however the viewer feels about magic; but overall, it just gives the piece a greater impact, and also a greater image and look).
It would be a waste to not utilize this opportunity, so use it when you can.

For this particular piece, this can quite easily be done by adding certain magical elements to the sword. For example, sparking blue light and a hue around the sword, and even certain elements could be added to the eyes, for example, if you made the sword green, same as the eyes, you could associated both these elements with each other, to show that the characters power within (presented through the eyes) is powering her sword (emphasized by the similar colour of her eyes, and the green hue around it).
There are plenty of techniques for presenting magic, and also giving a greater impact, and all these techniques are best thought of when playing around with various styles and so forth until it clicks into place.

Thus far, you have captured my eyes with beauty and perfection, but not with power or story. If you had also covered the later, you would have captured my heart in whole.

I'll stop there, as there isn't much more I could say, as the piece is brilliantly drawn and coloured. Love the texture of the cape, looks brilliant, plus the background is fantastic. Simple, and presentable. You can read what you are trying to convey very easily, a fantastic job.

If you like my review, come check out my blog (Link in my signature and profile), where I do similar type reviews and talks of random factors about the pieces I choose to feature, as well as sharing some of my favorite Anime Artists out there, the ones behind the many pieces I feature.
